so that's who Finnick ℓσνєѕ: johannawiththeaxe:“Maybe they’ll get better if you sleep a little,”...

“Maybe they’ll get better if you sleep a little,” Johanna said resignedly. She knew that there was nothing that could help them and a mixture of resentment and anger swept through her body. She saw the pain it caused Annie to move even a few inches. Why would they do this…

Johanna flashed her eyes in warning and tilted her head slightly towards the cameras that the Capitol had planted in their cell. She’d been careful not to say anything out of the ordinary, especially about the rebellion or the rebels knowing that every time that happened, the Capitol intensified their punishments. Johanna was sick of this. She was sick of feeling weak, sick of being manipulated…and most of all she was sick of how she couldn’t do anything about it.

Once again Johanna cleared her throat, this time in the hope that Annie would understand what she was saying. Another scream ripped out from the cell next to them. Peeta’s scream. It was an awful wailing sound that was full of sorrow and pain.

Johanna raised her eyebrows at Annie, “we should try and talk to him. See if he can hear us…maybe we could help him.”

Annie jumped at his scream, squeezing her eyes shut and covering her ears. She hated hearing the screams, it was almost constant. She knew she had to stop talking about Finnick, despite how much she wanted to, as they’d just hurt them all worse. She realized that now.

After a second the screams stopped and she came back to Johanna. “Talk to him? Talk to him like what? Scream to him?” It wasn’t a bad idea, she thought, but she didn’t know if she had the energy to scream. She’d try of course, if it could help Peeta in any way.

She looked back to Johanna, curious now. “What could we say to him?”

It was obvious to Johanna how much Annie hated the screams, almost as if the screams inflicted physical pain upon her. Johanna racked her brains for an idea. She just couldn’t stand listening to Peeta’s screams without doing something about it. She knew that no matter how much the Capitol tortured Annie and Johanna, it would always be their main priority to punish Peeta.

After all, the rebellions all over Panem had limited their supplies, the Capitol had to choose their battles wisely. District 3’s uprisings meant that they sorely lacked the technology to hurt all of the prisoners so it was obvious that Peeta was probably getting the worst of it.

Johanna replied, “maybe we could…I don’t know, ask him how he’s doing and tell him that we’re here too when he stops screaming.”

Their eyes met and Johanna knew that Annie was thinking the same thing as her: when the screams subsided into soft whimpers for Katniss and his father.

Annie bit her lip, nodding. She wanted to help Peeta in any way that she could but she didn’t know how the guards would react. They probably wouldn’t be to happy with the idea, but she agreed anyways.

As another scream rang through the room she stared blankly at the room, drifting away from reality. She wondered what Finnick was doing at this exact moment, where he was. She knew he was in District 13, but that’s all she’s been told. She would give anything at the moment just to be with him.

She snapped out of her daze, and leaned her head back against the wall. She was so tired and so weak and so fragile now, she didn’t know how much longer they could all go without food. She held her stomach as it grumbled, and she tried to push the feeling away. All that mattered was that Finnick was safe. They’d have to let them go sometime, or they’d get rescued , or something. “I miss the beach.” She whispered out loud, to no one in particular. She knew Peeta’s screams weren’t over with yet, unfortunately. It would be too soon.

Johanna sighed. She thought about District 7 again and what might have become of her old home….maybe they’d rebelled against the Capitol too. After all from what Johanna heard from conversations between the guards and peacekeepers nearly all the districts had rebelled. Johanna hoped more than anything that Annie, Peeta or herself wouldn’t pay the price for this.

Johanna looked over at Annie. Her tattered clothes hung on her wasted frame, she had a bruised lip and her hair was limp and tangled from twisting and turning in the few hours of sleep she managed to catch. Johanna knew she must have looked the same and absentmindedly went to run a hand through her hair before making contact with stubbly skin and realizing that there was no hair anymore.

With a frustrated kick at the wall Johanna once again turned to Annie.

“Tell me about District 4…about home,” Johanna said dully in the hope that it would take her mind of the emptiness of her stomach.

Annie smiled faintly, “Home is beautiful. The most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. The victors village has it’s own private path to the beach, so it was, like, two minutes away. I spent all of my time there.” She closes her eyes, remembering every detail of the path to the beach. It was filled with sand, so she didn’t even have to wear shoes. She remembered the feeling of the sand beneath her feet and made a vow that she would feel it again. She refused to die in the hands of the Capitol.

“And there was this icecream store in the town, so much home made icecream. Finn’s favorite was the grossest one in the shop.” She shakes her head, managing a breathy laugh. “And I used to make jewlery to sell when I was little. Out of seq glass. My family had our own stand. So when my parents passed away after I won, I sold it. I had more than enough money then.” Her voice had dropped to a dull whisper, talking about her family. Where was her little sister now? Was she still in Four?

She took a deep breath, rubbing her ankles again, “What about district seven? There’s no ocean there, right? Only trees?” She tried to think back to her victory tour, trying to remember District seven. She remembered the smell and that she was scared of Johanna, but that wa about it.

Johanna smiled at how animated Annie became at the thought of District 4, she must have missed it a lot…almost as much as she seemed to miss Finnick.

“Yes,” Johanna replied, “but it’s more than that…it’s just home you know? I’ve never lived anywhere else but District 7. It’s the smell of the earth and how alive it can make everything feel. I miss that.”

Johanna’s voice was longing and wistful, this was probably the most that she’d confessed to Annie or anyone. Suddenly she cocked her head to the side and widened her eyes to Annie.

“Do you hear that?” She breathed.

District Four: Johanna l Cyr

johannawiththeaxe:

“Yeah, District 4 seems to be the least violent of them all,” Johanna mused. Besides, the Capitol punish everyone, even District 4, Johanna thought silently in her head and remembered what Finnick had told her about his torture.

“Wow, I had no idea the Capitol thought…

Johanna squinted her eyes at him and said, “that’s very thoughtful…and cryptic.”

She tried to hide smiled at his words and failed. It felt good to not be recognized as the Johanna that everyone thought she was. She wasn’t all about ripping out throats unless you tested her patience.

“That’s good to know,” Johanna muttered ducking her head a little, “you seem very pleasant to me too…a lot nicer than most people I’ve met.”

District Four: Johanna l Cyr

johannawiththeaxe:

“Don’t,” Johanna said leaning back into the bench and squinting against the bright rays of sunshine, “it was interesting. But I don’t get why anyone would want to be a career. I always thought the Capitol glorified being a career which is why most people decided to be…

“Yeah, District 4 seems to be the least violent of them all,” Johanna mused. Besides, the Capitol punish everyone, even District 4, Johanna thought silently in her head and remembered what Finnick had told her about his torture.

“Wow, I had no idea the Capitol thought of me so highly,” Johanna laughed rolling her eyes.

“I guess I’m kind of like you. I used to be ruthless…it’s what the Games do to you,” she said almost defensively, “but I moved past that. I changed after the rebellions and the fall of the Capitol.”

And after Annie had her baby, Johanna smiled at the thought.

Why I love Johanna Mason #

“I’m not quite trustworthy yet,” says Peeta. “I can’t even sit here without your permission.” He indicates the guards with his head.

“Sure he can sit here. We’re old friends,” says Johanna, patting the space beside her. The guards nod and Peeta takes a seat. “Peeta and I had adjoining cells in the Capitol. We’re very familiar with each other’s screams.”

Annie, who’s on Johanna’s other side, does that thing where she covers her ears and exits reality. Finnick shoots Johanna an angry look as his arm encircles Annie.

“What? My head doctor says I’m not supposed to censor my thoughts. It’s part of my therapy,” replies Johanna.
